What’s Beef? A Rational Look At Why Lil’ Kim Is Mad At Nicki Minaj
A battle on wax mp3 between Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj could be epic but Lil’ Kim started on the wrong path when she started blustering in various interviews about Nicki Minaj being a swagger jacker. But anyway, here’s “Black Friday,” the highly anticipated official Nicki Minaj diss: “It’ll be a murder scene/ I’ll turn pink Friday to Friday the 13th.” That was probably the best line in the whole song. I will refrain from ghostwriter jokes but…all that hoopla for this? Smh. Diss tracks aren’t Kim’s strong suit…
This Woman is My Shero: Standing Up To Sexual Harassment
I discovered this video of a woman who took a stand against some random douche bag who thought it was a good idea to molest her, on Jezebel. She. Is. Amazing. “Oh yes! Oh fucking yes!” Quote of the century. Every woman has a story about being disrespected by some psycho who has issues with women but a lot of us don’t fight back out of fear for our lives or shame. In my case, sometimes I fought back sometimes I didn’t but the bottom line is it’s not cool no matter how you react and it surely isn’t a Read the rest of this entry »
Come To The Best Music Writing Reading Tonight!
I didn’t previously mention this here but a story I contributed to an April 2009 issue of XXL was selected as part of Da Capo’s Best Music Writing of 2010. The story was a break down of Nas’ Illmatic, where we went back and talked to some of the key players (producers, a&r etc) who made the album happen. Tonight there will be a reading where some of the writers who were recognized (for various stories) will present their work and I will be participating. I know it’s last minute but try to make it out if you can. Monday, Read the rest of this entry »
Queen Latifah’s ‘The Road To U.N.I.T.Y.’ Webisode 1
Queen Latifah teamed up with Cover Girl a few months ago to find five talented femcees who would remake her classic ‘U.N.I.T.Y.’ Their journey will be chronicled in a series of webisodes entitled The Road To U.N.I.T.Y. Part one debuted last week and I missed posting it on time but here it is anyway. In this inaugural episode Queen, MC Lyte, Lady of Rage, and Yo Yo talk about the trials and triumphs of breaking into the music industry:

The Winner For Halloween 2010 Was…
An American Apparel ad! Yeah, yeah, I know I wrote that blog about their snobbery but I couldn’t resist. It was too clever a costume.
Tyler Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls:’ Pros and Cons (A Review)
I’m not a Tyler Perry fan but contrary to a lot of his critics my aversion isn’t extreme. I don’t think all of his work is coonery (some of it is, but that’s another blog) but two of my major problems with him are dialogue and cliches. His work is rife with them. Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf is the extreme opposite of the aforementioned so when I first heard that Tyler Perry was going to be responsible for turning this epic work into a movie, I was concerned–very concerned. I’ve Read the rest of this entry »
