Roy Ayers Talks Hip-Hop Samples, Friendship With James Baldwin
OkayPlayer caught up with Roy Ayers for their on going series, The Questions. I love Roy Ayers’ music because there’s an organic element of cool that oozes on to his music that just speaks to me. I always imagined him to be one of the cool elder statesmen of the village that you can kick it with in the living room, and listen to his stories for hours. I’m happy to deduce, from watching this interview, that he is every bit of cool that I imagined.
Here, he reveals that he has the most sampled hits in hip-hop, expresses his love for Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and other artists who have sampled him; he talks about scoring the Coffy movie soundtrack, and drops some intel about who James Baldwin was as a person, as they once shared an apartment.
Now this is how I like to celebrate Black History Month. Check it out!
P.S. The intro to Coffy is my favorite Blaxloitation movie intro song. It’s just so sassy and funky!
So, here’s a bonus:
