Kelis Keeps it Retro Funky in the Video for ‘Jerk Ribs’
Kelis, the trendy chameleon, is preparing to release her next album, Food, in April and the visuals are finally starting to roll out. Her last album, 2010’s Flesh Tone, was more electro-pop but it sounds like Food is in the retro-rock (60s, 70s) lane, which is a good thing.
Her latest single “Jerk Ribs” (produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek) finally has a video and it takes on different visuals from what we’re used to seeing from her. Her fashion sense is style is still bold, psychadelic and edgy but the actual video looks more like a docuseries as we watch Kelis werq in a series of photoshoots and 60s-style performances.
“This song is the cornerstone of my album,” Kelis tells TIME. “So I wanted the video to look like my life, my love — back to the beginning.”

Fun fact: Kelis trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu.
P.S. I love the dress she’s wearing at 2:00.
What did you think of the video?
Not feeling the song, but the video is cool. That dress at 2:00 is everything! Kelis wears it well.
