M.I.A x Kenzo Drop New Music: ‘The Matangi Mix’
M.I.A. linked up with French fashion house Kenzo to release “The Matangi Mix.” It’s an eight-minute tribal style track full drums, Bollywood, house, bass and M.I.A.’s native Sri Lankan dialect. The hypnotic mashup starts off with what sounds like djembe’s being played for the gawds and then the beat switches up to incorporate other drum-influenced elements in the song. Eventually, M.I.A starts rapping.
“I’m thankful for my hands ’cause it’s a good thrower/ I’m thankful for my body ’cause it’s a f*cking banger/ I’m thankful for my mouth ’cause it’s a real screamer/ But most of all, I’m thankful for…my power,” raps M.I.A.
Typically, she doesn’t move me lyrically–because I don’t always feel like trying to decipher the deep from the nonsense–but I love what she says here. Plus, one constant with her is she has an amazing ear for beats. Listen to “The Matangi Mix” below:
Anyone else hop around undulating their hips and waving their arms around like a Shiva?
No? Did you at least imagine yourself doing it?
Still didn’t?
You’re crazy, that ish knocks!
