Uncle Obama’s Banana x International Hood Rat Stuff (The African Edition)

Deborah Vanessa from Accra, Ghana.

If you are easily appalled then stop here. Ratchetness ensues.

I once interviewed Issa Rae, the creator of Awkward Black Girl for VIBE.com, and although our talk was brief, it was entertaining. I didn’t really get to know her but we shared some funny moments that didn’t make the interview, and I walked away from it thinking she was someone I could hang out with. The more I followed her on YouTube and Twitter, the more I realized this is probably true, because it seems that we both find amusement in ratchet hood rat stuff posted to the internets. Issa Rae has lead me to this fine piece of African ratchetry entitled, “Uncle Obama’s Banana.” I am late in this discovery, as the video has been out for a few months but behold:

Did you peep the banana dance, though (at :39)?

You know, I actually cracked up laughing watching the whole thing. It wasn’t meant to be funny. In fact, she was trying to be witty. Double entendre is what I think the kids are calling it these days. Raise your hand if you didn’t get the monkey and banana references. Actually, if you didn’t get it just pretend that you did otherwise I’d judge you, like you’re probably judging me for posting this. Let’s call it even. I digress.

Anyway, there’s so much I want to ask but I’ll narrow it down to, did anyone else get weirded out by the “Uncle” references juxtaposed with sex talk? I’m just saying. But at least the “Obama” she’s referring to isn’t the Obama.

I did some digging about this woman, Deborah Vanessa, and found out that she was born to an Ashanti father and a Romanian mother and grew up in Accra, Ghana. And she has a website that looks relatively professional, and doesn’t seem as ratchet as this song makes her appear. She’s a TV host, model and based on what I read in her bio, she generally likes to be the center of attention, so why not take a stab at music? Everyone else is doing it. Let’s go ahead and dub her the Ghanaian answer to Paris’ Uffie.

Fuck am I doing with my life?

Maybe I need to generate some ratchet concepts of my own so that I too can entertain hood rat enthusiasts around the world. #NoShade.

P.S. Word on the street is, the monkey in the vid is actually her pet.
